Tutors: Alena Chenevix Trench

Alena’s love of handcraft has persisted beyond a 20-year career in nursing. Initially taking a Certificate & Diploma in Hand Embroidery, she has worked as an embroiderer in the RSN Embroidery Studio for two years, and aims to graduate from the RSN Future Tutors (FT) programme in July 2018. In addition, she has a City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

Alena has participated in several high profile RSN projects including the Naomie Harris Oscar Dress; the Nicholas Oakwell Couture ostrich feather gown for the GREAT Britain Campaign; and the ‘Whitewalker’ for HBO’s Game of Thrones. She has demonstrated for Burberry's Makers House in partnership with The New Craftsmen; and at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London for ‘Making it: Careers in Fashion’.
At the RSN, Alena has assisted teaching on Day Classes, Tour & Taster Workshops and on the RSN BA (Hons) Hand Embroidery Degree, and will assist teaching on the Summer Intensive Programme at Hampton Court Palace.  Externally, she has taught Learning Curves at The Knitting & Stitching Shows.
Some of her pieces have been exhibited at The Knitting & Stitching Shows, at the RSN exhibitions at Hampton Court Palace, at The Creative Stitches Show, ExCeL London, and at The William Morris Society at Kelmscott House, London.  Some of them have also featured in magazines and her Appliqué ‘Moonlight’ piece was used in the book, ‘RSN Appliqué - Techniques, Projects and Pure Inspiration’, by Kate Cross (2016).
Her Silk Shaded ‘Leopard’ has been made into RSN limited edition greeting cards, available in the Shop and online.
Alena has also worked as a Senior Embroiderer at the British Haute Couture fashion house Ralph & Russo.
