Royal School of Needlework

Welcome to the Royal School of Needlework The International Centre
of Excellence for the
Art of Hand Embroidery

Tutors: Sonja Galsworthy

Sonja joined the RSN as an apprentice at the age of 16, one of the youngest recorded RSN Apprentices. After graduating she started work in the RSN Embroidery Studio, where she was fortunate to work on many prestigious studio commissions including the Duchess of Norfolk’s christening robe.

After graduating Sonja specialised in ecclesiastical work, working on banners, altar frontals and priests apparel. She also worked with designers, most notably for award-winning milliner Philip Treacy on his infamous Black Galleon Ship hat worn by Isabella Blow at Alexander McQueen’s funeral.

After a sabbatical, Sonja returned to the RSN to work in the Embroidery Studio and then qualified as a teacher, teaching a series of Day Classes for the RSN.
