Class Date: Saturday 23 June 2018

Metalwork embroidery is a technique seen throughout history on pieces such as haute couture garments, ceremonial and military dress and ecclesiastical furnishings. Its richness and opulence was a symbol of wealth and power, and fine examples can be seen on the Queen’s Coronation Robe as well as high fashion today.

This cute badger design is embroidered in three Metalwork techniques over layers of felt padding. It is predominantly worked in silver metal threads in a variety of stitches including Couching, Chipping, Cutwork and Or Nue (couching with a contrasting colour), all traditional skills in this beautiful style of embroidery.  Once completed this can be mounted and hung in the little wooden hoop provided.  The finished badger embroidery measures approximately 8 x 6cm, and the wooden hoop is 11cm diameter.

This class is suitable for all levels although some experience would be an advantage.

This design is the third in the 'woodland creatures' series by the tutor Becky Hogg

The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.

This class will run from 10am-4pm at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 9AU

This technique has its history in military, ecclesiastical and royal regalia, but it also creates the most beautiful and dramatic embroideries. Using a wide variety of metal threads, it can be combined with other techniques to produce luxurious effects.
