This course has already taken place.

Your day at the Royal School of Needlework will include the Stories in Stitch Tour plus a half day taster embroidery class.

The tour will last for 1.5 hours (seating is available) and begins with an illustrated lecture from a senior member of staff, giving historical context and information about the Royal School of Needlework.  The Stories in Stitch Exhibition Tour then takes place for the final hour when our volunteer guides will show visitors around our main Studio rooms.

Our Stories in Stitch exhibition will showcase a wide range of hand embroideries in Appliqué, Stumpwork and Raised Embroidery. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in these three enchanting techniques which lend themselves so perfectly to the world of storytelling.

After lunch you will join Tutor Helen Jones who will guide you through stitching. Tours commence at 11am and the class will  start at 1.30pm and finish at 4pm.

In preparation for the RSN exhibition “Stories in Stitch” we conserved some of our 17th Century Jacobean raised work pieces from our archive.  One piece, “The Chase”, became the subject of more detailed study and work was undertaken to

understand the stitches used in the piece and, where possible, to source replica materials.

Using materials as close to the original as possible we will create this little acorn using couched gimp, silk wrapped purls and a buttonhole stitch.

The taster will be led by RSN Tutor, Helen Jones, who participated in the conservation work.

The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.

This class will run at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 9AU
