This beautiful white work technique is often known as English, Madeira or Swiss work. It largely consists of open worked spaces, of various shapes which have been cut or pierced with a stiletto and then overcast. This one day class will introduce the student to round and shaped eyelets, padded and voided satin Stitch, trailing and stem Stitch which are the main elements of of Broderie Anglaise. It was used most commonly for decorating baby clothes, lingerie, handkerchief corners and table linens.

The Horseshoe image is the set design for this one day class. The Butterfly image will be available to students attending both the Broderie Anglaise and Richelieu day classes should they wish, as it is a larger design and combines the two techniques.

The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.

This class will run from 10am-4pm at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 9AU

The term applies to a variety of techniques, ranging from the bold stitches to more delicate work. Whitework traditionally uses white thread on white fabric in bridal and christening wear and ecclesiastical pieces. It also adapts well to contemporary designs.
