This course has already taken place.

A three day class introducing the student to historic blackwork techniques using a portrait of Esther Inglis painted in 1595 as our point of inspiration. We will explore counted fillings and outline stitches in black thread on white counted fabric whilst the design is influenced by Inglis’s embellished clothing.

The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.

Please note that the image is an example of the technique.

This class will run from 10am-4pm at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 9AU

Blackwork is a historical technique that has been developed by the RSN to become a form of tonal stitching. The technique uses a variety of geometric stitches in one colour which enables dramatic effects to be created. It is particularly effective with portraits and architectural themes.
