The aim of this is to introduce the basic components of this counted thread technique.  By varying thread thickness and breaking up geometric patterns it is possible to create monochrome pieces in which the emphasis is on the depiction of light and shade.  Different patterns will be sampled to gain familiarity with the processes. There will then be an opportunity to stitch a small project on a provided design. Blackwork requires the ability to count threads and see patterns. No previous stitch experience is needed.

By the end of the day students will have an understanding of the techniques used to create light and shade in Blackwork,
samples for future reference and sufficient skills to finish their project at home.

The class kit will include everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and you will be able to borrow ring frames, magnifiers and lights (if needed) on the day.

This class runs from 10am-4pm at Grand Central Hotel, 99 Gordon Street, Glasgow G1 3SF

Blackwork
Blackwork is a historical technique that has been developed by the RSN to become a form of tonal stitching. The technique uses a variety of geometric stitches in one colour which enables dramatic effects to be created. It is particularly effective with portraits and architectural themes.
