This course has already taken place.

In this five day class is designed to introduce you to a variety of embroidery techniques.  Each day will focus on a different technique which will combine together to form a final image. This unique course has been designed, with the beginner in mind, to give a good grounding in 5 techniques.  After the main elements have been completed and applied, the student then has the opportunity to add as much or as little embellishment as they wish to truly make it their own.  The techniques included are Creative Blackwork, Stumpwork, Appliqué, Surface stitches and Beading.

The first two days will cover creative Blackwork and Stumpwork.  Blackwork is a  traditional technique uses geometric patterns on an open weave linen, in this instance you will create a “slip” that will later be used as an applied fabric.  Stumpwork techniques will use a varieties of stitches including Turkey Rug stitch and buttonhole stitch to create raised elements.

The final three days will cover Applique, surface stitches and beading.  These techniques will be worked in the appropriate order to complete a piece like this.   Applique is the process of applying fabrics, in this instance an embroidered slip, felt padding and cotton fabric along with the Stumpwork slips.  A variety of Surface stitches and Beading will be used to embellish and enhance the piece using different types of thread such as stranded cotton, crewel wool and coton perle.  Both flat and cupped sequins will be available along with different coloured seed beads.

During this course the student will also learn how to transfer their design elements onto fabric, prepare fabrics for application and gain an understanding of how a piece like this comes together.

Each day you will be provided with the materials and tuition you need to complete each stage of the piece.
This class will run from 10am-4pm at Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey. KT8 9AU
