Royal School of Needlework
Welcome to the Royal School of Needlework To teach, practise and promote the art of hand embroidery
Tutors: Caroline Homfray
Caroline Homfray is a professional maker and artist since 1999, Caroline has forged her own style and techniques and exhibited a wide variety of work, including paintings, drawings and embroidery. Her speciality is free machine embroidery, and she developed a method of making unique jewellery from embroidered elements; the designs are characterised by their richness of colour and form, many based on plants, shells or fish. Major projects include a commission in 2003 from V&A Enterprises for jewellery to sell alongside their Gothic: Art for England exhibition, and she has also completed private commissions, with work for clients in the UK, Europe and America. She has been a keen dressmaker all her life, with a wide knowledge of construction techniques and couture sewing skills. She most enjoys inventing new clothing designs and combining colours, often referring to clothing of the past for ideas.
Caroline has a degree in English Literature and Art History. She is a skilled communicator and has lectured and taught in the UK. Recently she has returned to developing her drawing and painting, while continuing to satsify her obsession for colour through fabrics and threads.
