Degree Programmes

In September 2009 the Royal School of Needlework launched its Foundation Degree in Hand Embroidery, accredited by the University for the Creative Arts.  This is the only course of its kind in the UK and is held at Hampton Court Palace in Surrey, the home of the RSN.  Study is full-time over two years.

Who is the Degree for?
This course is for you if you're planning to pursue a professional career path in embroidery or in related areas.  You'll acquire the technical skills of hand embroidery combined with art and design and contextual studies.   Successfully achieving the Foundation Degree in Hand Embroidery will give you a recognised academic degree, open doors to continuing higher education and help prepare you for a professional career in your chosen area which could include fashion, textiles, conservation, costume or as a designer/maker.

What you'll study
Being a Foundation Degree, many of the projects within the course are linked to work-based learning and there is the opportunity in the second year to pursue a work placement which may take place in the RSN Studio as well as with other companies.

Embroidery techniques covered will include crewelwork, blackwork, whitework, silk shading, raised work, goldwork, and canvaswork. The course will end with a final project developed by each student individually in negotiation with their tutor.

What's available after the Foundation Degree?
You'll be able to continue your studies by taking the one year honours top-up at the RSN.  Alternatively, following an interview, you may join the third year of the UCA BA Hons Textiles for Fashion and Interiors.  This will give you the opportunity to explore stitch in a wider context and with a more personal focus.  Alternatively the Foundation Degree will prepare you for the world of work.
