Silk Shading & Goldwork Combined

Silk Shading is a  beautiful technique using many colours of cotton or silk threads skillfully blended to achieve the natural appearance of a flower, fruit or animal. Goldwork uses sumptuous metal threads of all kinds and colours. Combine the two techniques for stunning effect with traditional and contemporary designs for fashion, interiors and ecclesiastical embroidery.

NEW COURSE - 16th century Designs in Silk Shading and Goldwork
The Elizabethans were famed for their love of embroidered insects. You will have the opportunity to choose a typical Elizabethan motif such as a silkworm, butterfly, damsel fly or beetle. Over the course of this two-day workshop, we will work a sample in silk and gold on linen. Some experience of both techniques is required.
Designs, materials and equipment will be available to purchase in the class.

Persian Islimi Designs stitched in Silk and Gold
Using the traditional "S" scrolling pattern as the basis of a design, we will explore the elegant "Shah Abbas" floral motif forms in traditional Islimi (arabesque) designs. Use padding with silk and goldwork to create stunning textures within your own unique design. Some experience of both techniques is required.
Materials and equipment will be available to purchase in the class.

Advanced Silk & Gold for Ecclesiastical Work
A workshop for experienced stitchers who are currently working or preparing to work on traditional or contemporary items for places of worship. If you wish you may bring your own project to stitch under the tutor's guidance. Please let us have details of the design and purpose of your work by 15 March 2010. If you are not working on a specific project, but wish to experiment with advanced techniques, the tutor will advise on design ideas and working with both silk shading and goldwork.
Experience of both techniques is required.

Enjoy bringing the past back to life with a project that will involve working an RSN archive design in silk and metal threads, techniques to include silk shading, padding, cutwork, chipwork and laidwork. Some experience of both techniques required.
