Welcome to the Royal School of Needlework

Keeping the art of hand embroidery alive.

The Royal School of Needlework is based at Hampton Court Palace. Our mission is to teach, practise and promote the art of hand embroidery to the highest standards, within both historical and contemporary design contexts.

All RSN students, whether on a one day course or for a year or more, are taught the traditional techniques of hand stitching. How students then go on to use the stitches is up to each individual. This approach encourages the greatest flexibility to use traditional stitches in a modern context.

We offer

  • Courses for all levels, from beginner to highly experienced needleworkers for one day, a weekend, summer school or a year.
  • Tours of our Collection and Studio

Click here for a copy of our May Mailing showing courses, tours and events from June-December 2008.

  • Our Studio undertakes new commissions and conservation/restoration of historical embroidered pieces
  • From 2009 a new two-year Foundation Degree
  • A Collection of textiles and archive materials comprising some 60,000 objects
  • An online shop for kits and materials
  • An unique opportunity to learn embroidery techniques from highly skilled RSN graduates.

As a charity we don't receive any government support and have to fund our own activities. You can help by becoming a Friend or Special Supporter of the RSN.
